The LGBTQ+ Studies minor offers perspectives for students interested in examining the broad array of how people embody and express gender and sexuality. Courses allow students to explore how heterosexuality and binary gender became dominantly constructed, and how LGBTQ+ people organize social justice movements to expand expressions of gender and sexuality. The minor also explores the ways that gender and sexual identities are always formed and experienced through meanings of race, ethnicity, and colonialism.
The LGBTQ+ Studies Minor replaces the Sexuality Studies Minor at Ohio State.
1. The successful student will question common sense, dominant assumptions about “natural” and “universal” concepts of sexuality and gender by understanding LGBTQ+ identities and social movements as historically, geographically, and culturally generated, located, and contested.
A. Recognize that sexuality and gender are socially constructed in time and place.
B. Interrogate dominant assumptions about sexuality and gender.
C. Identify how LGBTQ+ social movements both contest and construct norms of sexuality and gender.
2. The successful student will understand LGBTQ+ identities as intersectional and embodied.
A. Define intersectionality.
B. Describe identities as uniquely experienced and embodied.
C. Map categories of sexuality and gender to other social differences and hierarchies of power.
3. The successful student will know that sexuality and gender are constituted and contested through race, ethnicity, white supremacy, settler colonialism, and empire.
A. Critique binary constructions of sexuality and gender.
B. Recognize that many people and communities experience sexuality and gender beyond LGBTQ+ categories and straight and cisgender identities.
C. Articulate LGBTQ+ identities and social movements to white supremacist and colonial systems, especially through analytic frameworks such as women of color feminism, queer/trans of color critique, and indigenous studies.
