Karl Whittington

Assistant Professor, Department of History of Art

Karl Whittington completed his Ph.D. at the University of California, Berkeley and joined OSU’s History of Art Department in 2010.  He specializes in medieval art and architecture, particularly in Europe from the eleventh through fourteenth centuries. His current research explores the intersection of science, sex and spirituality in medieval maps, drawings and diagrams.

Other research and teaching interests include medieval theories of vision and the image, the representation of the body, queer art history, and the history of science.  His current book project is entitled Body-Worlds: Opicinus de Canistris and the Medieval Cartographic Imagination
