The feature-length documentary, that will be screened on March 12 at 7 pm in the Saxbe Auditorium of The Ohio State University, is an intimate portrait of an artist that illuminates one of gender theory’s most influential minds. Cited by IndieWire as one of the must-see films of the 2014 festival circuit, Director Sam Feder’s film captures the many facets of this queer hero and pioneering gender outlaw. The documentary sheds new light on issues of critical importance to trans and queer communities such as: gender theory as a survival strategy; depression and alternatives to suicide; a broad gender spectrum vs. the rigid gender binary; illness, treatment, and recovery; and notions of queer family and legacy. Kate Bornstein is a performance artist and playwright who has authored several award-winning books including Gender Outlaw: On Men, Women, and The Rest of Us, Hello, Cruel World: 101 Alternatives to Suicide for Teens, Freaks, and Other Outlaws, and her memoir A Queer and Pleasant Danger which inspired the documentary of the same name. Sam Feder is a multidisciplinary artist exploring interpersonal power dynamics and the politics of media-driven identity. Their directorial debut (Sam identifies as trans and uses gender neutral pronouns), the award-winning feature film, “Boy I Am”, is cited by Curve Magazine as one of the “10 Must-See Gender Documentaries." The screening of the film will begin at 7 pm in Saxbe Auditorium, and will be followed by a post-screening discussion with Kate Bornstein and Sam Feder. This event is free and open to the public.
