Interdisciplinary Undergraduate Minor
Program Description
The minor in Sexuality Studies focuses on the social, historical, psychological, literary, legal, and political contexts in which human sexualities have been and are currently being expressed and theorized. The minor pays particular attention to the tension between non-normative sexualities and the concept of heterosexuality against which they are typically defined. It also investigates the ways that sexuality is shaped by social roles and identities, such as race, gender, dis(ability), nationality, and social class.
The minor in Sexuality Studies requires 20 credit hours, with at least 10 hours selected from the
central courses. The remaining 10 hours can be taken from the
central courses and/or the
electives included on the course list or approved by one of the coordinating advisers. At least 5 of the 20 hours should come from a college outside the student's own. A number of the courses listed have prerequisites, which must be taken or waived by the instructor, and enrollment in some courses may be limited because of demand or available space. In addition, students must have approval from one of the Sexuality Studies coordinators before taking topical courses where the content changes from quarter to quarter. The approval ensures that the content for a particular course is appropriate for the minor (to be approved, at least 50% of the content of a course must address sexuality). No more than 10 credit hours of coursework at the 200 level may count toward the minor. Credits may overlap with GEC requirements. Students must maintain a C average in the minor, and no grade lower than C- will count toward the minor.
Once one of the Sexuality Studies coordinators has approved the Minor Program Form, the student must file the form with a counselor within his or her college.
General Information on Minor Programs

Minor programs are not required for graduation.

A student may not take a major and a minor in the same subject.

Courses used on the minor may not be used on the major.

Where appropriate, overlap between the GEC and a minor is permissible unless specifically disallowed for an individual minor.

All minors require a minimum of 20 credit hours; some require more. No more than 10 hours of transfer credit may be applied to any minor.

When students complete more than one minor, each minor must contain a minimum of 20 unique hours.

No grade below a C- will be permitted in courses comprising the minor; the minimum overall CPHR of the minor shall be 2.00.

Courses taken on a Pass/Non-Pass basis may not be applied to the minor.

Some minors need individual approval by a faculty member; others do not. Sheets describing the individual minor contain this information.

Students need not file their minor programs until they file their graduation applications.

Once a minor program is on file in the college/school office, any changes must be discussed with the faculty adviser and/or the college/school counselor.
