Alan Woods, an Associate Professor in the Department of Theatre, studies the ways in which gender is defined through performance, and audience perceptions of the presentation of sexuality in differing historical periods and different geographic locations, particularly in works by authors exploring sexual identity, or in theatrical companies self-defined by sexual orientation. His articles on a wide variety of historical topics—most recently on director Julie Taymor and South African performance artist Andrew Buckland—have appeared in every major scholarly journal.
